Review: Mammut Alto Guide High GTX

Will Renwick pulls on a technical and lightweight pair by Mammut

Mammut’s Alto Guide High boots are designed with Via Ferrata and multi-day hikes over rough terrain in mind. Basically, journeys with steep and rocky ascents and descents.

They are rated B1 which means that while the sole is stiff, it also have a bit of flex, making it only suitable for use with a C1-rated strap-on crampon.

The outsole has a deep tread and a bit of a step to the heel of about 2cm. The midsole has a PU injection and memory foam to make for a comfortable fit and feel. Overall the shape of the sole is quite wide, meaning that you can wear these with some very thick socks if you’re taking them out in cold conditions.

The upper has a Gore-Tex waterproof membrane lining and a synthetic mesh outer with Nubuck leather overlays and a rubber rand wraps right round its base with strong reinforcement in particular on the toe. A nice feature is the neoprene gaiter that is integrated with the tongue to prevent gravel and dirt from entering – a common problem in Via Ferrata territory. The lacing system is also well made, with an even tightening right from the lower instep up to above the ankle, and easy-loop metal fitting eyes.

Despite all this protection, the boots are still very light at 1.19kg for a pair of size 8.5 – that’s about the same weight as many standard three-season walking boots. They’re also available in men’s and women’s versions.

A good option if you’re heading for some high-level trekking or taking on some rubbly scrambling and want boots that are lightweight but without sacrificing sturdiness and protection.
